5 Reasons to Have a Backyard Wedding | Edgerton, Wisconsin

You’re planning your wedding and looking at tons of gorgeous venues, but none of them seem like the right fit for you and your wedding day. But if you can’t find a venue what will you do? Well, I’m here to tell you there is another option that has lots of benefits! A backyard wedding!!! With minimal drawbacks, backyard weddings can be a fantastic alternative to your typical wedding venue.

Here are just a few reasons why a backyard wedding is a GREAT option for your wedding day:

  1. Lower Cost - This one is a big one! Choosing to host your wedding in your backyard means you won’t have to worry about spending thousands of dollars on a venue for your ceremony and reception. Sure you might need to rent a tent for shade or just in case it rains, but these are usually much less expensive than renting out a venue for the day. (Here are some tent rental companies near the Madison are: Blue Peak Tents, Event Essentials, Bucky’s Rentals.)

You can also save money on food. Most venues require a licensed caterer to provide all your food. However, with a backyard wedding, you can choose to make your own food! This can be super helpful if some of your guests have food allergies that a caterer wouldn’t necessarily cater too. You can also opt to have a potluck and ask your guests to bring their favorite dish to pass. This saves you time and money!

Drinks are another huge cost when choosing a traditional venue. All venues that serve alcohol require a liquor license and a licensed bartender. And most don’t allow their customers to bring in their own alcohol. Having a backyard wedding doesn’t require either (although designating one or two people to help serve drinks can be helpful). Purchasing your own alcohol, soft drinks, or water is much more cost effective, especially if you know that there are certain people who like to party.

Without the cost of renting a wedding venue for your ceremony and reception, you have the option to save that money to spend on other things, like on your must-have vendors, your honeymoon, or a downpayment on a house. Or you can choose to save that money and keep your wedding as budget friendly as possible.

  2. Total Control of the Day - Having a backyard wedding means you have total control of your wedding day! You can choose any date you want to get married, not just a Saturday! If you want a Thursday or Friday wedding, you can! This is great if you’re working around family schedules, odd work hours, or trips coming up.

You also have complete control of what the space will look like! You get to decide how you want your wedding day to look whether that’s fancy and sophisticated, laid back and casual, or just a great big party with your closest friends and family!

  3. More Intimate - Usually backyards tend to be smaller than a venue. And having a smaller space means having a smaller guest invite list. This can make the day even more special because you can keep your guest list to only your closest family and friends. This allows you more time to hang out and visit with each of your guests throughout your wedding day. Having a smaller guest list also means not having to invite people that you don't really know but that your parents think should be invited.

  4. No Time Restrictions - With a typical venue, you have a time restriction for when you can be there to set up and when you need to be out by. With a backyard wedding, you don’t have that time restriction! You can start setting up, putting out decorations, setting up tables, etc. whenever you’re ready. When it comes to the end of the night, the party can go as long and late as you want! And if you’re too tired to take down all your decorations the same day, you can just wait until the next day to take care of cleaning up.

  5. More Relaxed - Backyard weddings tend to be more relaxed when it comes to the timeline and atmosphere of the day. Because everything is in one place, your friends and family don't have to worry about being late or getting lost on their way to the ceremony or reception. Plus with everything happening at one location (a location they most likely are familiar with), your friends and family will be easy to locate for photos. This allows for a more relaxed schedule!

Whatever location you decide is best for your wedding day, remember that this day is about you and your partner! Don’t let other people persuade you to do something that doesn’t feel right or doesn’t feel like you. This day should be about you marrying the love of your life!
